With some extraordinary technical prowess, Leo Lippolis is truly a DJ inside and out. When he takes charge of the wheels of steel everyone is absorbed into his musical journey.

Born in Messina, Sicily, Leo Lippolis’ first performances date back to the age of 14 when he was the leading man at his friends’ birthday parties.
However the real evolution took place a year later when he became resident Dj for one of the nineties most famous Italian Clubs: the Marabou of Giardini Naxos, a temple of dance music with international guests who went on influencing his sound.
With his truly unique style, ranging from the darker side of tech house to the real house beats, Leo Lippolis has produced a huge amount of quality tracks and is currently producing for big labels and remixing popular artists, converting the music to fit his own style.
Some of those labels include Konneqt, SolidE, Pornostar, Olatu Recordings, Natura Viva, Phunk Traxx, Supercharged, Decide Music, 418 Music, and many more.
Being a close friend of many top artists from different lifestyles and music genres, his artistic soul is continually fueled by sounds coming from the Toolroom team, Dosem, Prok & Fitch, Phunk Investigation, Hot Since 82, Fedde Le Grand, Chuckie, Todd Terry, Barbara Tucker, Ron Carroll, Cristal Waters, Ultra Nate, the list goes on…
This explains well his natural inclination for creating productions that encompass 2 seemingly different music styles but very contiguous because one actually starts where the other leaves off.
As well as being a highly respected producer he has already earned a reputation for being a formidable DJ having played all over the world with some highly notable sets.
He builds his live performances from house, tech house, techno and deep style elements mostly, dynamic, pulsating grooves and captivating vocal tunes are also featured in his sound world, a sound world that is loved by those who hear him either with his productions or live sets.
Something magical happens with Leo on the decks, a real energy takes hold and people get connected to music in a way that is beautifully pure.

Interview

When did you start DJing?

Music has always been a great passion. I received my first turntable when I was only 8. It was an orange “Penny”. Beautiful! Since that moment, music has become my lifemate: an endless energy and inspiration source that in a few years turned into a real job.

From my classmates birthdays, to “Tout Và” in Taormina and “Marabù” in Giardini di Naxos in the amazing ‘90s, the step was natural. When I was 16 years old I turned down a recruitment with Maradona “Primavera” team, in Naples, because I realized that I wouldn’t be able to combine two so opposite worlds. However, the game was already won by the music that has always taken most of my time and dedication.

Practicing for many hours in my garage, I also got rid of my stutter, a discomforting nervous disturb that has influenced my adolescence and that, even today, when I’m tired, shows up.

The turning point was the day of my 18th birthday, when a friend of mine invited me to play at some of the events that would take place in one of the clubs in Corvara, in Alta Badia. They should have been 4 (if I’m not wrong), instead, it ended with me joying those mountains for the next 10 years and becoming the resident dj of Club Moritzino, an international prestigious showcase that gave me a lot, both referring to visibility, contacts and personal enrichment.

You have been living and working abroad, in Barcelona, for so many years now. How different is the international underground scene compared to the Italian one?

The international underground scene is considerably more developed than the Italian one, even if, for some time now, I’ve noticed an increased number of passionates both about the genre and the events or festivals offered locally.

I’ve decided living in Barcelona not only because Techno and Tech House genres are daily soundtrack of that city but also because music sector is one of the most important and profitable businesses in Catolonia (and, in wider terms, in Spain).

I think this is the main point: unlike Italy, foreign countries invest a lot in music business, in terms of money, infrastructures and diversity of supply. This leads to a symbolic presence of booking agencies and artist management, of important events and labels. In this aspect, Italy is not really competitive even if it has always been breeding ground for the birth of great artists like Marco Carola, Enrico Sangiuliano, Paride Saraceni and many more.

Underground music also achieves great support  in Latin America and Mexico. USA offer an impactive reality, particularly in cities like San Francisco, Chicago and Detroit. However it’s still difficult to define boundaries, the market is large and US dominate it boasting the most important stars of all music genres (pop, rock, rap, jazz, real house).

There is a way for the underground world also in Japan (Richie Hawting is a frequent visitor), while China remains anchored to EDM and Dance genre. Very interesting India and Dubai scenario.
